Crash Test Boat Gas Explosion!
We have been working with the team from Yachting Monthly magazine on a new series called "Crash Test Boat". Over the last few months we've been inflicting plenty of damage to an average 40ft cruising yacht to see what happens and what we can do as sailors to help mitigate any disasters.
In the final scenario we wanted to see what would happen if we created a gas explosion.
With the help of gas installation expert David Stopard and the Royal Navy we took our long suffering boat to the Isle of Wight. We created a controlled gas leak which was then ignited by a series of detonators.
This was one of our most ambitious tests with the most potential to fail. We all had a nervous wait, listening to the countdown. The aftermath took us all by surprise, the devastation was immediate. Incredibly the hull was intact and we were able to tow the boat back. The most haunting memory was that of our mannequin floating head down in the water over 50 ft away!
Footage like this has never been seen before and we'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts.
